Personality: Polnareff is stern most of the time, and absolutely hates children. He will force you to get something right the first time, or it will be "a waste of precious resources." He is a quick learner, but he will prefer you to do it his way. He's very stubborn, and does not like being proved wrong in any way. Is, on oh-so many levels, a perfectionist. He's aggressive to the point of some thinking his ability was Anger Point.

Appearance: Polnareff is tall and heavy, yet surprisingly skinny. He's got a fire in his eyes, one that seems like it is the determination of a human.

Description: He's a normal Skarmory, ability-wise. His voice is gruff and scratchy.



History:

I can't remember my childhood...

Polnareff hatched alone in the darkness of an eternal night, in a forest far secluded from most would dare to visit. He never knew who his parents were, he only knew that Mandola would take care of him, even though she wasn't his mother. Mandola was an elderly Medicham skilled in making the illusions of magic. Polna, being a young and impressionable chick, wanted to learn how to do this too.

That time of purity, when you are immune to the evils of the world...

Mandola then proceeded to push Polnareff through the training of magic. It was much too harsh for a chick his age, it was meant for those that were older by several years. The first thing he learned was to never show weakness to your enemies, even though it didn't really relate to magic. It was more of 'how to act as a magician'. Mandola taught him how to use TMs then, continuing his training, and on his 10th birthday he was gifted with TM Hidden Power.

I can't remember ever being innocent... I was to blame for everything.

Polnareff was a candidate for learning to use magic, luckily, his hidden powers being psychic. Mandola slowly taught him how to harness the power of Hidden Power, teaching him to levitate small rocks and then bigger ones, then onto crushing them. He was overjoyed at the fact he could do things with his mind, but then he asked if he could use it on the few mean Pokémon in the shallower part of the woods. Mandola sharply scolded him and told him to never think like that again. He made many mistakes after this for reasons unknown, and Mandola slapped him and told him to try again, even if it was a job deserving a 99%.

Did I ever have a childhood?

Polnareff was one to make mistakes, and Mandola constantly punished him for them. He never shed a tear, though, he took his punishments -No dinner, a lecture on why he shouldn't do that, or maybe even a beating- silently. Mandola wasn't a forgiving teacher, but she wasn't abusive either. Polna never knew anything more gentle, he believed life was rough like that and everyone had temperaments like this. One day, after making the mistake of forcing his Hidden Power onto another Pokémon to levitate them, Mandola punished him harshly that night. It was the first night he screamed in pain in over a decade.

Oh well.

Polnareff had never harmed another Pokémon in his life, but that was about to change. Polna's scream was loud enough to be heard about half a mile from his home. A Flareon, overhearing his scream, burst through the door and saw the scene. Polnareff was on the floor, sporting a bloody nose and was bleeding from his mouth. One of his wings, as well as his tail, were severely bent and warped past their natural joint ranges. The Flareon pinned Mandola down, and began to use fire-based attacks on her. Polnareff was torn - He didn't know if he should attack the Flareon, who was attacking his teacher and caretaker, or Mandola, who had bruised and bent him over the past 20 years? He decided too late, though, when he coud finally get to his feet after all the pain, Mandola was bleeding profusely and the Flareon was suffering severe injuries. Mandola's fate was sealed. Polna decided to further it then by swiftly attacking Mandola with a Steel wing right in her heart, ending her life then and there. Several days later, Polna and the Flareon had a conversation.

That's too bad...

"Get over it, man, she brutally punished you, and she was, what, 80?" "...I've never come in contact with others. It's all I've ever known." "Dude, that's harsh." "...There's a better world?" "Yup. Not everyone you meet along the way will be nice, but some will. Maybe I'll be the only one you'll meet, but that's OK. You've known kindness now, and that's something not everyone can get." "...Like I had before you came?" "Yup... I've got to go now. My injuries aren't too bad now, don't worry about me." "...But, what's your name?" "Farren. And yours?" "Polnareff." "It was nice meeting you, Polnareff. Don't get beat up by old ladies anytime in the near future, I won't be able to fend them off for you." "Okay!... I will!" He sighed. "If Mandola didn't just die, she would be fuming now..." His legs grew heavy, and bright yellow sparks floated like bubbles from his body. Is... Is this the end? My tale ends with Mandola wreaking vengeance on me from the grave...? ...How anti-climatic... He sighed and closed his eyes, the sparks growing ever more present, ready to accept what fate had in store for him. Soon, though, he was able to move, and the sparks stopped. For, this was the first time he had ever seen it, the sun was rising. A light breeze hit his face. The grass around his feet rustled. "...! Wha- It's so bright! What is this?! There's suddenly a wind blowing, the grass is swaying, the world has been lit up! Is... Is kindness all over the world now?" He sighed. "...I let her die. She'd be saying I'd done this wrong.... And I'd get beaten again." He scowled. "And I'll be forced to try again, even though I did nothing wrong." He paused. "The light of the world is pretty, though."

I guess I'll try again.

Perhaps this time he would get it right.

• Named after Polnareff the Asvogel, a condor-like bird from Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru. Mandola is from the same game.
  
• The determination in him (like a human) is a reference to the fact that Polnareff was turned into a human at the end of the game.
  
• Asvogel is his last name in tribute to his original species.
  
• He's 'magical' because he learned to levitate objects and crush them with his Psychic-type Hidden Power from Mandola, as stated in his history. Hence, some of his his aliases ('Wizardry' and 'Merlin').
